X Factor winner’s Little Mix have hit the top spot this evening with their debut single ‘Cannonball’. However it seems there’s plenty of work to do before the girls get anywhere close to the success of the Spice Girls, with the track selling even less than Leon Jackson.
The group’s cover of the Damien Rice track managed to shift just over 210,000 copies since its release last week, making it the second least sold winner’s track to date, beating only Steve Brookstein.
However the song was still the fastest selling single of the year so far, and outsold the rest of the top 5 combined.
Simon Cowell said: “I’m absolutely thrilled for Little Mix on their first No.1. I think they have something really special. Congratulations!”
Little Mix added: “To go to No.1 this week is simply amazing, as just to release a single is beyond our wildest dreams. For our single to be the biggest opening week sales of the year is just mind blowing! We want to thank everyone that has supported Little Mix, voted for us and bought the single this week. It means the world to us.”
But it seems that the girls’ time on top of the charts will be short lived, with Military Wives tipped to take the Christmas number one next weekend.
