The Sun claims that he is one of several former stars to try out for the talent contest, the rules of which permit any currently unsigned artist to take part, even if they’ve had a record deal in the past.
James released two Top 40 tracks in 2004 and 2005, but his debut album later failed to chart. He was known to be friends with the late Amy Winehouse.
A source said: “There has been some amazing talent auditioning so artists who had deals in the past must still be of a top standard to compete.”
Viewers will find out if Tyler is picked by one of the four coaches – will.i.am, Jessie J, Tom Jones and Danny O’Donoghue – when The Voice launches on BBC One this Spring.
