Strictly Come Dancing professional Katya Virshilas axed from new series

Dan LobbProfessional dancer Katya Virshilas has been dropped from Strictly Come Dancing ahead of the new 2012 series, it has been reported.

According to The Sun, the show’s new executive producers Glenn Coomber and Andrea Hamilton recently held a meeting with the current line-up of professionals to discuss their futures on the show.

But while the majority of them will keep their jobs, 28-year-old Katya has been axed to make way for a fnew face.

She had appeared in the last three editions, partnering former cricketer Phil Tufnell, rugby player Gavin Henson and presenter Dan Lobb.

The newspaper’s source said: “Glen and Andrea wanted to meet the dancers and hear why they wanted to do this year’s show. They always knew they wanted to bring in fresh talent but it was about deciding who would have have to make way and they decided to give Katya the boot.

“She is not as high profile as some of the other female dancers, although it was a close call and it was nothing personal against her. Producers are excited about the new dancer, who they hope will shake up the show and keep the other professionals on their toes.”

They added: “All the other dancers are back, including James, who many thought might be axed because of his row with Craig [Revel-Horwood].

“But producers want as much drama as possible this year and bringing James back to face Craig could provide that.”

Anton Du Beke, Brendan Cole and Erin Boag are the only dancers who have appeared in all series to date.

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One later this year, with Darcey Bussell replacing Alesha Dixon on the judging panel.
