Lord Andrew Lloyd-Webber has followed in Alesha Dixon’s footsteps and moved from the BBC to ITV1, with plans for a new musical reality show.
After successful talent shows looking for stars to play leading roles in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and the Wizard of Oz, Lloyd-Webber is now on the hunt for a singer to perform in Jesus Christ Superstar.
According to The Sun, composer Lloyd-Webber will be back as judge as on the BBC shows, while Welsh West End star Steve Balsamo is also set to be on board.
However in a twist, the musical will not be played in theatres on the West End, but rather in music arenas such as the O2.
A source told the newspaper: “He has been wanting to get this off the ground for some time but the BBC just didn’t want it.
“They had issues about auditioning for Jesus. They feared Christians would get hot under the collar. The Beeb also kept getting flak for effectively promoting Andrew’s commercial interests.”
However the tabloid reveals that there are still some hurdles to overcome, following on from ITV’s previous failed attempt to launch a similar show in 2007.
Despite being produced by reality telly supremo Simon Cowell, Grease Is The Word failed to interest viewers and was ditched after the one series.
