The controversial winner of Red or Black who scooped £1 million despite a conviction for assault has said he won’t be donating any money to his victim. 31-year-old Nathan Hageman spent two and a half years in prison for assault, but was still awarded the top prize last weekend.
Show boss Simon Cowell said Nathan should look to his conscience when it came to spending the money, suggesting he should donate some of it to his victim – his ex-girlfriend.
But today Nathan said: “I didn’t have to pay her a penny then, so why should I have to pay her now just because I’m a millionaire?”
Speaking to the Sunday Mirror, he continued: “I’m not paying compensation. They asked for compensation in court and were told the length of sentence was severe enough and they would not award compensation.”
Referring to the allegations made against him however, Nathan explained: “I never touched her. I’d never hit a woman. Now I’ve been made out to be this brute. My lawyer told me to plead guilty to the burglary and I’d get a lighter sentence. But I never admitted hitting a woman. I was furious when I got five years.”
The former bricklayer however did insist he would be making a donation to the Duchess of Kent House hospice, which looks after cancer patients in Reading, Berkshire.
