PICTURES! TellyMix goes backstage at Big Brother!

We were lucky enough to take a visit to the Big Brother set recently, fortunately when everything was calm and strangely quiet!

We were given access to the whole of the Big Brother compound, snooping around to see what we could find.

In the task room were an array of props for future tasks, many of which we can’t even imagine how they’ll eventually be used.

Even Bit On The Side had its own dedicated props team, with a smell that brought us back to working on DT projects at school.

However like many TV shows, the reality isn’t anywhere near as glam as you might think.

With the main studios in Elstree occupied by big shows like Dancing On Ice, The Voice UK and more recently Red or Black, Big Brother has been forced to create its own set of makeshift cabins to work out of.

Even narrator Marcus Bentley doesn’t get any special treatment, doing the voice overs for the live shows out of a ticket style booth situated just next to the garden.

We also got the chance to sneak into the live gallery and take a look at the streams from all 42 cameras in the house.

A team works around the clock on the show, typing up every single word, moan and grunt the housemates utter, all in the name of compliance.

Story lines between the housemates are picked up on throughout the day, and the show is edited overnight before a first screening at 9:30 in the morning.

But a show like Big Brother is a legal minefield. Ofcom regulations aren’t the only thing editors have to be aware of, the threat of slander or libel means many hours of footage needs to be cut.

And any mention of anyone outside of the house who hasn’t given their permission to be spoken about must also be scrapped.

Eventually, after much cutting and editing, the final show is ready to air.

Just 24 hours until the next one…
