Dean 'Midas' Maynard on Week 3 X Factor auditions: Jade Richards brought the house down

Michael Lewis X Factor 2011

The third week of X Factor 2011 auditions has been and gone, (don’t worry it’ll soon be Christmas!), so did we see a winner? Or a potential Midas act?… The show started with 42 (ahem) year young, David Wilder, a rock singer who looked like he had just retired from an Aerosmith tribute band…

Give him his due though, he did sing well and entertained the crowd, but it wasn’t my cup of tea. I’m sure they’ll have him back in the band.

Next up, we enjoyed a montage of 16 year old singers, mostly very good, but very forgettable. They weren’t really given enough airtime to make any judgement on. Still, plenty of years left to keep auditioning.

Then we met the likeable Luke Lucas, a name for the stage if ever there was one. Little Luke gave a great vocal, not too dissimilar to Jimmy Osmond, and looked very at ease on the stage. The crowd swayed along. He should get mothers’ votes.

We then had a whole segment of acts sent to torture our ears, while bringing on the attitude.

Michael Lewis was the first of these, you will remember him from last year dressed as Michael Jackson, telling us there was no love in the room. He returned this year without Michael, but was still talentless… and believe it or not there was still no love in the room. Strange!

Gary Barlow’s quote of the week, “The good news is, you stopped singing”

Girl band Angel, were up next. Not too many Angels in their voices though. Out of tune, out of sync and now out of the competition.

As we entered the last part of the show, we needed a good act to save the day, and boy did we get one. Jade Richards from Fife, told us that she just wanted to improve her life and singing was her chance of doing this. Jade’s inspiration is her gran, and she came along to witness a star in the making.

Jade gave us a fantastic version of Adele’s Someone Like You. It was emotional and meaningful and it brought down the house.

Her performance was so fantastic, judge Kelly Rowland started crying, Louis Walsh got emotional, Gary Barlow remained stiff upper lipped, but did tell Jade that her performance would, “change her life”. Gary, I agree.

Jade joins Misha Bryan and Janet Devlin on the potential Midas act list. My choice will be announced exclusively on this page, at the end of auditions and before bootcamp.

As per usual, I will finish with a few of the messages I have been sent since show 3 aired.

Clare Stephens said, “Loved the mix of talent, X Factor just gets better and better”

Heather Moir said, “Jade gave me shivers down my spine”

And the final word has to come from Oli Patterson who simply said “Tulisa is well fit!”
